Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about working with SoftDoes. Can’t find an answer?

How long does it typically take to hire developers with proven Salesforce Lightning expertise?

Through traditional recruiting, hiring a senior Lightning developer often takes two to three months once you account for sourcing, screening, technical interviews, offers and notice periods. The pool of engineers with real LWC, migration and Experience Cloud experience is smaller than the general Salesforce market, which stretches timelines further. Working with a pre vetted partner like SoftDoes shortens this considerably, because candidates have already passed technical assessments. In most cases you can review matched profiles within days and have an engineer starting work within a couple of weeks, depending on how quickly your team completes interviews and grants org access.

What does it cost to hire a developer or team with deep Salesforce Lightning expertise?

Cost depends on seniority, location, engagement model and scope. Senior Lightning engineers in North America command premium salaries, and a full time hire also carries recruiting fees, benefits, tooling and the cost of a long search. A dedicated remote engineer or pod through SoftDoes is usually priced as a predictable monthly rate that covers the engineer, senior oversight and replacement guarantees. For defined projects such as an Aura to LWC migration or a portal launch, we can estimate effort after a scoping session. We share transparent pricing once we understand your org, backlog and timeline, so there are no surprises.

What engagement models are available for Salesforce Lightning projects, such as a dedicated hire, a pod, or a contract?

SoftDoes offers flexible models that match how your Salesforce work actually flows. A dedicated specialist joins your team full time and works inside your processes, which suits a steady backlog of component and page work. A pod combines a Lightning developer with a reviewer and, where useful, QA or admin support, which suits migrations and portal builds with clear milestones. Project based contracts work well for a defined scope with a fixed outcome. Many clients start with one engineer and add pod members as their roadmap expands, and you can adjust the model as priorities change.

How do you ensure time zone alignment with a team skilled in Salesforce Lightning?

SoftDoes focuses on clients across the US and Canada, so we match engineers whose working hours overlap substantially with your core business day. Before an engagement starts, we agree on shared hours for standups, code reviews and release windows, and we confirm availability for your deployment schedule. Our engineers join your communication channels and follow your sprint rituals rather than working in isolation. For teams spread across several North American time zones, we plan overlap around the most critical meetings, so admins, product owners and developers can resolve questions the same day instead of waiting overnight.

How does SoftDoes technically vet developers for Salesforce Lightning expertise?

Our vetting goes well beyond certifications and resumes. Engineers complete a practical exercise building a Lightning Web Component that reads data with @wire, exposes configurable properties for App Builder and includes Jest tests. Senior reviewers then probe architectural judgment, asking when to use Lightning Data Service versus Apex, how to plan a Visualforce or Aura migration, and how to secure Experience Cloud guest access. We also discuss Lightning Web Security restrictions, SLDS usage and Salesforce DX workflows. Finally, we assess communication, because Lightning developers work closely with admins and business stakeholders who need clear explanations, not jargon.

What support is available for scaling the team after launch as our Salesforce Lightning needs grow?

After launch, many organizations find new needs quickly: more record pages to modernize, additional portals, or deeper integrations. SoftDoes supports growth by adding engineers from our pre vetted network who already understand the delivery standards your team uses. Because we work as a team delivery model, new members inherit documented patterns, review practices and component libraries, which shortens their ramp up. You can also scale down after a major release without long contracts holding you back. Our replacement guarantee continues throughout the engagement, so continuity stays protected as your Salesforce roadmap evolves over time.

How to Hire Developers Skilled in Salesforce Lightning

Most Salesforce teams know the pattern. A developer who looked strong on paper ships a cluttered record page, a portal that loads slowly, and Aura components nobody wants to touch. Sales reps fall back to spreadsheets, admins cannot reconfigure anything, and the migration away from Classic stalls for another quarter. The right Salesforce Lightning engineer delivers the opposite: fast, clean pages that users adopt, reusable components that admins can configure on their own, and a UI layer that scales with the business. This guide shows you how to define the role, source specialists, vet them properly, and onboard them quickly.

What Salesforce Lightning Really Does for Your Business

What Lightning Developers Actually Build Every Day

Salesforce Lightning is the modern user experience layer of the Salesforce platform. In production, it is where your users live: record pages, consoles, dashboards and customer portals. A skilled Lightning developer shapes how quickly people find data, complete tasks and trust the system. Typical work looks like this:

  • Building Lightning Web Components. Developers create components on web standards such as custom elements, shadow DOM and modern JavaScript. They use the @api decorator for public properties, reactive fields for state, and @wire to read Salesforce data through Lightning Data Service and the UI API without unnecessary server calls.
  • Migrating from Classic and Aura. Many orgs still carry Visualforce pages, JavaScript buttons and old page layouts from the Classic era. Lightning developers rebuild these as modern components and convert older Aura components to LWC, preserving business logic while improving speed, maintainability and the overall experience for end users.
  • Designing configurable components for App Builder. Strong developers build components that admins can drop into record, app and home pages through Lightning App Builder. They expose sensible properties, support dynamic forms and visibility rules, and avoid hard coded pages that force a developer ticket for every small layout change.
  • Building Experience Cloud portals. Partner portals, customer communities and help centers run on Lightning components inside Experience Cloud. Developers tune page performance, configure guest user access carefully, and respect sharing rules so external users see exactly the records they should, and nothing that exposes sensitive internal data.
  • Applying the Lightning Design System. Developers use SLDS styling, design tokens and base Lightning components such as lightning datatable and record forms. This keeps interfaces consistent with the rest of Salesforce, accessible to all users, and faster to build than custom markup and handwritten CSS for every screen.
  • Testing and shipping through Salesforce DX. Professional Lightning work runs on source control, scratch orgs and Jest unit tests set up with sfdx lwc jest. Developers also work within Lightning Locker and Lightning Web Security restrictions when bringing in third party libraries, so releases stay predictable and secure.

Why Lightning Expertise Pays Off at the Executive Level

Weak UI work on Salesforce rarely fails loudly. It quietly erodes adoption, slows releases and piles up rework. Deep expertise in the Lightning platform changes that equation in four concrete ways:

  • Higher user adoption. When record pages load quickly and show the right fields at the right moment, sales and service teams actually use Salesforce instead of side spreadsheets. Better adoption means cleaner data, more reliable forecasting and reporting your leadership can trust when making pipeline and staffing decisions.
  • Faster delivery cycles. Reusable, configurable components let admins handle many page changes without developer involvement. Your engineers stop fielding small layout requests and focus on features that move the business, while product owners see changes reach users in days rather than waiting weeks for the next release window.
  • Lower technical debt. Experienced developers retire Visualforce pages, JavaScript buttons and fragile Aura code in a planned way instead of layering new work on top. Each migrated component becomes easier to test, easier to hand over and less likely to break when Salesforce ships its regular platform releases.
  • Secure, scalable portals. Experience Cloud sites expose your org to partners and customers. Experts who understand guest user security, sharing rules and client side performance protect sensitive data and keep portals responsive as traffic grows, reducing the risk of embarrassing incidents and costly emergency fixes after launch.

Laying the Groundwork Before You Open a Role

Know Exactly What You Need Before You Source

Before you write a job post, get clear on what your org needs from its Lightning layer. Talk to admins, sales operations and support leads about where users struggle today. List the Classic customizations still in use, the Aura components in production and any portal plans. If the work spans more than the Salesforce UI, for example a separate web app or backend service, consider whether custom software development support should run alongside your Salesforce hire.

Scoping the Work and the Architecture

Start with an honest audit of your current org. How many Visualforce pages, JavaScript buttons and Aura components are still active, and which ones do users touch every day? Are you planning an Experience Cloud portal for partners or customers, or extending an existing one? Do record pages rely on hard coded layouts that admins cannot change? The answers decide whether you need a migration specialist, a component library builder or a portal expert. Write down the pages and processes that matter most to revenue and support, because those define the first ninety days of work for your new developer.

Choosing Seniority and the Supporting Stack

Lightning work is rarely pure front end. Developers often call Apex methods when custom server logic is needed, so decide how much backend depth the role requires. A senior engineer should own component architecture, migration planning and code review, while a mid level developer can build components against an agreed pattern. Check the complementary skills too: modern JavaScript, Jest testing, Salesforce DX, source control and continuous integration. If your org depends on heavy integrations or complex Apex, pair the Lightning specialist with a platform developer rather than expecting one person to cover everything well.

In House Hires or a Dedicated Remote Pod

A full time in house hire makes sense when you have a steady, long running backlog and the budget to recruit and retain Salesforce talent in a competitive market. A dedicated remote pod fits better when you face a defined migration, a portal launch or a backlog that will grow and shrink over time. Pods bring a developer, reviewer and often a QA or admin partner who already work together, which cuts ramp up time. Consider your internal capacity to manage Salesforce engineers. If nobody on staff can review LWC code, a pod with built in senior oversight reduces risk considerably.

Writing a Requirement Profile That Attracts Real Experts

A sharp requirement profile filters out generalists and attracts engineers who have done this work before. Cover these four elements:

  • The technical mission. State the specific outcome: migrate a set of Aura components to LWC, rebuild Classic record pages in Lightning Experience, or launch a partner portal on Experience Cloud. Concrete goals tell strong candidates the work is real and help weaker candidates recognize that the role is beyond their experience.
  • The ecosystem and tooling. List the tools in use: Salesforce DX, scratch orgs, your source control platform, Jest for LWC testing and any CI pipeline. Mention clouds in scope, such as Sales Cloud, Service Cloud or Experience Cloud, so candidates can judge their fit against the actual environment they will work in.
  • Team dynamics. Explain who the developer works with every day: admins who configure pages in App Builder, architects who set standards, and business stakeholders who request features. Clarify review practices, meeting cadence and time zone expectations so candidates understand how decisions get made and how their code reaches production.
  • System impact. Describe what success changes for the business: faster case handling for support agents, higher adoption among sales reps, or a portal that partners actually use. Tying the role to visible outcomes attracts engineers who think about users, not only about components, and sets clear expectations for performance reviews.

Finding, Vetting and Onboarding the Right People

A Hiring Process Built for Lightning Specialists

Generic Salesforce screening misses the specifics of Lightning work. Many candidates list Salesforce on their profile but have only configured pages or written Apex triggers. Your process needs to test component design, data access patterns and migration judgment directly.

Where to Find Proven Talent

Standard outbound recruiting casts a wide net, but you will spend weeks filtering profiles that mention Salesforce without real LWC depth. Job boards bring volume, not precision, and certifications alone do not prove someone can migrate a complex Aura component cleanly. Pre vetted networks shorten this dramatically because candidates have already been tested on Lightning work and have a delivery history you can check. Drawing from an established talent network lets you review a short list of engineers who have shipped LWC components, Experience Cloud sites and Classic migrations, rather than starting from a cold search each time.

Testing Skills That Resumes Hide

Go beyond the resume with a structured technical review. Ask candidates to explain when they would use @wire with Lightning Data Service versus an imperative Apex call, and why. Give a practical task: build a small LWC that displays related records, exposes properties for App Builder and includes a Jest test. Add a design discussion about migrating a Visualforce page with a JavaScript button. Test problem solving under constraints, such as a slow portal page or a blocked third party library under Lightning Web Security. Finally, assess communication and culture fit by having them walk an admin through their component.

A 30/60/90 Day Plan for Fast, Safe Ramp Up

A good hire still stalls without a structured start. Plan the first three months before day one:

  • Days 1 to 30: access and orientation. Grant source control, scratch org and sandbox access in the first week. Walk the developer through your org structure, key record pages and existing components. Assign a small, low risk change, such as a component fix, so they learn your review and deployment flow quickly.
  • Days 31 to 60: first meaningful delivery. Hand over a scoped project, for example migrating one Aura component to LWC or rebuilding a heavily used Classic page. Expect Jest tests, documented properties for admins and a clean pull request. Review the result together and agree on standards that will guide every component they build afterward.
  • Days 61 to 90: ownership and improvement. The developer should now own a domain, such as the service console or a partner portal. Ask for a short technical debt assessment and a migration roadmap for remaining Classic or Aura assets. By this point they should ship production ready code independently, with review as a safeguard.

Making a Confident Hiring Decision

Warning Signs and Strong Signals in Lightning Candidates

Interviews reveal a lot when you know what to listen for.

Red flags:

  • Defaults to Aura for new work. A candidate who still starts new components in Aura, or cannot explain why LWC is preferred, has not kept up with the platform. Expect slower components, harder maintenance and another migration project sooner than you planned.
  • Hard codes everything. If their components have no configurable properties and they cannot describe App Builder support, admins will depend on developers for every small change. That habit creates bottlenecks and a backlog full of trivial layout tickets.
  • No testing habit. Candidates who have never written Jest tests for LWC, or treat testing as optional, ship regressions. Ask how they would test a wired component; vague answers signal fragile code that breaks during regular Salesforce releases.
  • Ignores portal security. Someone who builds Experience Cloud pages without discussing guest user access or sharing rules can expose sensitive records. Treat any casual attitude toward external user permissions as a serious warning sign for portal work.

Green flags:

  • Explains data access tradeoffs. Strong candidates clearly describe when Lightning Data Service and the UI API are enough and when an Apex call is justified. They think about caching, server round trips and limits before writing code, not after users complain.
  • Builds for admins. Senior developers design components with clear properties, sensible defaults and support for dynamic forms. They talk about making admins self sufficient, which shows they understand how Salesforce orgs actually evolve after the first release.
  • Plans migrations methodically. They describe inventorying Visualforce pages and Aura components, prioritizing by user impact and migrating in stages. This shows judgment about risk and business continuity, not just familiarity with the newer component syntax and tooling.
  • Uses SLDS and base components. Experts reach for base Lightning components and design tokens before writing custom markup. Their interfaces look native, stay accessible and need less maintenance, which keeps your UI consistent across every page and portal.
