What is custom software development?
Custom software development is the process of designing, building and maintaining software for one organization’s users, data and workflows, instead of buying an off-the-shelf product made for everyone. It covers internal tools, customer portals, SaaS products, system integrations and AI features. The organization owns the code and controls what gets built next.
It is also called bespoke or tailor-made software development, or custom application development when the result is a web or mobile app. Unlike customizing an existing product, it starts from your process instead of someone else’s.

Web and mobile apps
From $20,000. iOS and Android apps from one shared codebase, plus web apps, with the admin panel and back end behind them.
Modernization and code audits

Talk to usCustom software vs off-the-shelf software
When custom software is worth it
- Your team works around its tools with spreadsheets and copy-paste.
- Your systems don’t share data, so the same information is typed twice.
- Per-seat fees grow faster than the value you get.
- Your process is part of why customers choose you.
- You face security or compliance rules a product can’t meet.
- You have outgrown a no-code tool or the limits of a SaaS product.
When to buy instead
Buy when the process is standard, such as payroll, email or accounting, a product already covers it well, and you need it next week. Many companies mix both: off-the-shelf where it fits, custom software where it counts.

Custom software development FAQ
Everything you need to know about working with SoftDoes. Can’t find an answer?
How much does custom software development cost?
Small features and integrations start around $3,000. Complete products usually cost $8,000 to $133,000, depending on user roles, screens, integrations, data migration and regulated data. See the price table on this page, or get a range in a few minutes with our cost calculator.
How long does custom software development take?
Most of our projects run 4 to 6 months from discovery to launch. A focused MVP launches sooner, and large platforms ship in phases, so your team starts using the first release early.
How do I get custom software built?
Write down the problem, who will use the software and which systems it must connect to. Then choose who builds it: an in-house team, freelancers, a no-code tool or a development company. With SoftDoes, you start with a free 30-minute build plan call, then discovery, design, development in short sprints, testing and launch.
Should we build custom software or buy a product?
Buy when your process is standard and a product already covers it. Build when the process sets you apart, when your tools don’t share data, or when per-seat fees and workarounds cost more every year than owning the software. Many teams start by connecting the tools they already use.
Is custom software the same as customizing software?
No. Customizing means configuring or extending an existing product, such as adding fields to a CRM. Custom software development builds new software around your process. Customizing is faster and cheaper when a product covers most of your needs; custom software makes sense when it doesn’t.
What is the 40/20/40 rule in software engineering?
It’s a rule of thumb that splits a project’s effort into about 40% planning and design, 20% writing code and 40% testing and fixing. It reminds teams that coding is the smaller part of the work. Our process follows the same idea: discovery and design come first, and testing runs through every sprint.
Who owns the code and intellectual property?
You do. Your company owns all of the code, designs and documentation we create for you, as written in the contract.
Do you work under an NDA?
Yes. SoftDoes sends its own NDA, and it is signed before any project details are shared. Request it with the form at the bottom of this page.
Is SoftDoes insured?
Yes. SoftDoes carries professional liability (E&O), cyber liability and general liability insurance. If our work causes a loss, the claim goes to our insurer, not to your budget. Your procurement team can request a certificate of insurance for its vendor file.
Do you offer fixed-price projects?
Yes. After discovery, phase one is a fixed price. We also work on time and materials when the scope will change, as a dedicated team inside your organization, or as a monthly product team after launch.
Can you take over an existing system?
Yes. We start with a code audit, then stabilize, document and improve the system, or plan a rebuild when that costs less over time. We also move older systems to the cloud.
Can you add AI to software we already use?
Yes. We add AI agents, document processing and assistants to your CRM, ERP and internal tools, connected to your own data, with access rules your security team can review. Read how to connect AI to your CRM.
Do you build MVPs for startups?
Yes. We build MVPs for funded startups and for new product lines inside established companies, scoped to launch fast on code you can keep building on. See what a SaaS MVP costs.
How do you keep projects on time and on budget?
A written scope, a fixed price for phase one, regular demos and one accountable lead. You see working software throughout, so changes are decided early, when they cost the least.
What happens after launch?
We stay on. Choose a monthly support plan for monitoring, updates and fixes, or keep a dedicated team shipping new features as the business grows. See product development.
Where is SoftDoes located?
SoftDoes is based in Mission, Kansas, in the Kansas City area, and works with companies across the U.S. Delivery is led from the U.S., with one accountable lead on every project.
Is SoftDoes a good custom software development company?
Clients rate SoftDoes 5.0 on Clutch from 40 verified reviews, and Clutch gave SoftDoes 16 awards in 2026, including top software developer, AI company and machine learning company in Kansas City. Our largest client is a government agency with more than 10,000 employees.
