01.Overview
Deepwater Insights is a specialized financial research firm covering the global offshore drilling industry, a niche deliberately underserved by major institutional players.
Founded by a former buy-side analyst with over a decade of coverage experience, the firm produces proprietary data and editorial content for a targeted base of investors who need depth that generalist platforms can't offer.
SoftDoes designed and built a WordPress platform that bridges the firm's established social presence with a professional web destination capable of hosting both free editorial content and gated premium research.
"Every time I asked for something to be done, I got a response within 24 business hours. It was pretty much everything I could ask for."
-Tommy Lee, Founder, Deepwater Insights
02.Client background
Tommy Lee spent years as a professional analyst covering offshore drilling before building a substantial following on Twitter and Substack by sharing independent research.
After leaving institutional finance to operate Deepwater Insights full time, he needed more than a social media presence. Institutional investors, family offices, and hedge funds were asking serious questions, attending conferences, and looking for a professional home base.
A Twitter handle wasn't cutting it. The business needed a website that could match the credibility and complexity of the research behind it and grow into a full content and data commerce platform.
03.Challenge & solution
Deepwater Insights had real traction and real demand, but no permanent home for it. The core problem was structural: social media content disappears in 24 hours.
Investors who discovered Tommy's work through Twitter had nowhere to go deeper, no archive, no subscription path, and no signal that this was a legitimate enterprise.
Research with institutional-grade depth had no institutional-grade home
Free content was generating awareness but no monetization path existed
Conference relationships stalled when the only follow-up was a social handle
Competing with well-resourced firms required projecting credibility at first contact
A planned premium data product needed paywall infrastructure before it could launch
Building the web presence in-house would have pulled focus from the proprietary database at the core of the business
SoftDoes built a brand-aligned WordPress platform designed to serve as both an editorial destination and a premium research storefront.
The site's visual identity was developed to carry through the look and feel Tommy had already established on Twitter, giving existing followers immediate brand recognition while presenting new visitors with a credible, professional research firm.
Custom WordPress build with editorial content architecture for ongoing research publication
Paywall integration for premium one-off reports and gated data products
Design system developed to match established Twitter/Substack brand identity
Mobile and desktop parity throughout
Scalable foundation built for phase two: a richer data interface for valuation tools and rig rate analysis
04.Results
Deepwater Insights launched with a credible, scalable platform that reflects the quality of its research. The site gave the firm a professional touchpoint for institutional investor relationships and a durable content destination that compounds over time.
Professional web presence replaced social-only outreach for investor development
Editorial platform supports ongoing research publication with permanent archiving
Premium content infrastructure in place and ready for paid research launch
Brand continuity between Twitter, Substack, and web presence maintained at launch
"I could tell SoftDoes understood what I wanted to do. Some other people weren't listening. SoftDoes listened. That's the differentiator."
-Tommy Lee, Founder, Deepwater Insights
